History: Barriss' Wikia

Barriss Offee was the Jedi apprentice of Jedi Master Luminara Unduli. She is a female Mirialan. She was Master Unduli's apprentice during the Clone Wars period. She was known for her studiousness and attention to detail. She was present at the first Battle of Geonosis, and later returned to Geonosis when the planet fell back under Separatist rule. During the second visit to Geonosis, Barriss befriended fellow Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano when they were paired together for a mission. She had been the brains behind their task, memorizing the layout of a twisting maze of caverns she and Ahsoka were supposed to infiltrate and blow up. But when things didn't go according to plan, it was Ahsoka's quick thinking that saved the both of them. Since then they were friends and they endured a number of battles together.

However, as the war drew on, Barriss began to doubt the righteousness of the Jedi and the Republic, she became disillusioned with her faith. Just after she was raised to knighthood she turned on the Jedi Order and the Republic. She orchestrated a terrorist bombing of the Jedi Temple that killed civilians, Clones, and Jedi. When the Council singled out Ahsoka, she didn't come forward to clear her friend's name. Instead she planted evidence to incriminate Ahsoka further, so far had she turned from the Jedi she was willing to let her friend die for what she'd done. She only confessed after Anakin Skywalker discovered her involvement and confronted her. He bested her in a duel and then brought her before the Military Tribunal trying Ahsoka for her crimes. But even after she was captured, she didn't back down from her conviction that the Jedi had lost their way in the war.

Personality: As a Jedi padawan, Barriss was studious, contemplative, courteous, and reserved. She applied herself to her Jedi studies as well as any Jedi Master could want, and she held herself to a level of perfection that might even be unhealthy. She valued respect, and was courteous to everyone she interacted with. She thought deeply about Jedi philosophy and morality (though in the end, her disillusionment with the Jedi lead her to a terrible conclusion). She is generally reserved and holds back her thoughts until given permission to express them.

History: Barriss is the oldest daughter of Mateo Offee. Her mother, Catalina, died in childbirth, so all she knows of her is from her relationship with her mother’s mother, Ivelisse. (Her father didn't like to talk about Catalina, it made him too sad.) Her father, saying he couldn’t stay on the same island were the love of his life died, moved himself and infant daughter from Puerto Rico to the mainland USA – Miami, Florida to be exact – where his daughter’s grandparents were living. They would help raise the little girl with a large extended family.

Mateo fell in love again when Barriss was two and he remarried. Barriss soon started getting brothers and sisters.

A lot of brothers and sisters. Four sister and three brothers.

Barriss never had a bad relationship with her step-mother (Rosa) or half-siblings. And the rest of the extended family that came with Rosa. But sometimes they were a bit overwhelming. And she never really felt like she fit in with them. By all means, they weren’t mean. But Barriss just never found her place in the structure of her immediate family. Which is why her Nana’s home was her favorite place to hide from her large family. When she was younger, she spent her most of her time baking with Nana, reading, or doing homework.

From a young age, Barriss knew she wanted to be a doctor. By the time she was ten, she’d decided she wanted to be a surgeon. Human anatomy fascinated her and she liked the idea of helping people. Her mother had died in childbirth due to uncontrolled hemorrhaging from plecenta accreta that was undetected until birth. Surgery would have saved her mother’s life. But the cost of school to become a surgeon was astronomical, and Barriss didn’t come from a family of means. Her father told her at a young age that if she wanted to be a doctor, she would have to start working for that dream sooner than later. She would have to go to school on grants and scholarships and anything she could save up before she graduated high school.

And that’s what she did. She focused herself on school so she was the top of her class. She took on extracurricular activities that would make her transcript look even better. She took as many AP credits as she could, to test out of those generals when she was in college. She was a member of the debate team, mostly to practice expanding her knowledge. She was in the Biology Club, easy to see why, most of her projects centered around biology in medicine. She was a Mathlete because she said it made her think about problems from more than one angle.

And all her hard work paid off, but at a price. She was valdictorian, but she never really learned how to be a kid or to have close friends. Her friends were her study groups and Mathlete and debate team members. She didn't get invited to a lot of birthday parties and her own were more of a family affair (though that didn't mean they were small by any means, she just had a big family.)

She got into Columbia for her undergrad, where she got top marks. She made it through on grants and scholarships. Which did set her up better than some of her classmates. She could focus on studies. She transitioned well from high school to college, her study habits from before were just as good in college. But again, she skipped any of the social aspects of college in favor of working hard. After her undergrad, she got into the Columbia University in the City of New York for medical school, and then she stayed for her residency.

Medical school and her internship passed much the same way high school and her undergrad did--fully focused on her studies. She would defend her choices, this was the only way to achieve her dream. And maybe she never stopped to assess if this was what she really wanted, but a few years into her residency and she still thinks she wants to be a surgeon.

Personality: Barriss is hyper focused on achieving her goals. She was taught sacrifice at a young age, and has never stopped since. She loves her career, she loves having found a way to help people. However, it has come at a cost. She is socially awkward and doesn't know how to not be blunt, or how to put herself out there, so to speak, without being offensively direct. However, she wouldn’t be put off by anyone who called her out – she’d prefer it if someone told her she was being rude, so she could change her behavior.

She values science over faith, though she was raised Catholic, so there's a lot of ingrained guilt there. But she is curious so she'll self-educate and listen to people about their experiences. Ultimately, though, she would not take any sincerely held religious beliefs as facts unless bolstered by science.

She wouldn't say she's brave in the sense of a super hero, but blood and guts don't make her faint, a good quality of a surgeon. She'll grit her teeth and do the dirty work necessary to get things done and then process later. Though she might initially hesitate in a dramatic situation sprung on her, she’s trained herself to be good at following directions. And after the initial shock, she would snap to action.

She has no sense of work/life balance and doesn't see the need to find one. Someday her life will be less hectic, right now, she's married to her job.

First Person (50 word min) or Third Person (250 word min):All I ever wanted was to be a surgeon. And I'm three years into my residency and everything was going fine. But now, I have to come to terms with the fact that I am more than just a human: I'm a green alien! Green! I feel a bit cheated, it's so unoriginal. All aliens are green. Couldn’t I be a bit more unique?
