How does my character 'enter' the game?
Every character starts by going about their everyday life somewhere in New York City, whether they are in school, at a job, don't have a job, working on a hobby, sleeping, taking a shower, taking a shit, whatever. And then they have their first Memory Event: the first memory of your character's canon life that they receive back. The memory is a very brief moment - thirty seconds at most. Every part of it will feel completely real. Your character will relive the memory from the memory's point of view - during the Event, they will be that canon character.

This Event will affect and disrupt everyone in about a city block radius of your character - anyone in that area will see the memory, too but everyone but the character will be an NPC. Though, they are spectators while your character actually relives the memory first-person. The Memory Event won't destroy any property or cause any harm. NOTE: These spectators are to be NPCs only, they cannot be played characters in the game.

Your character is now part of what is informally called: The Different.

The Bureau will know when this Event happens. They will be waiting for your character when the Event dissipates (How did they get there so fast? That's BIA business). They will erase the memories of everyone, but when they try to erase your character's memories, they won't be able to. That's when they will know your character is one of the Different. During the dizzying moments after this first Event, when your character is still compliant and docile from their experience, your character will get a brief summary of the situation by Head of Department of Dimensional Containment, Mr. Martin:

Earth is the cross-roads of intersecting universes
The Bureau exists and its primary function: to monitor and manage that intersection of universes.
That the character will get more memories that cannot be stopped
That the character is not alone, there are more like them, receiving memories
That the character might go through some 'changes' that The Bureau can't predict
The Bureau will be watching the character
And finally they'll explain the Network.

And then they'll send your character on their way, to live their life.

What is the setting of the game?
The game is set on modern day Earth, in New York City. This Earth does not have anything inherently special about it (no natural paranormal activity, mutants, magic, etc.) except for the fact that it is a crossroads between an infinite number of universes. The barriers between our universe and all the other universes are thin here on our Earth, and sometimes stuff from the other universes bleeds through.

Characters must live in New York City. Here, have a map of New York City for those who don't know the area. Characters can take trips and vacations, but they must primarily live in New York City.

Characters can travel in this universe as far as they have the means to travel. However, this setting adheres to the truths and realities of our Earth. Meaning, unless your character gets a spaceship from their universe (if their universe even has spaceships), they aren't visiting Mars any time soon. And if they were able to find a way to get to Mars, they won't find any Martians (unless there's a game plot bringing in Martians from another universe...).

The game setting will expand to include other realities as plots are implemented. See our Expanded Universe Page for more information.

Game Setting Earth Differences
There are a few differences between our real life and the Earth in the game setting. These differences are to make the game setting more playable. All differences are listed here and will be updated as needed.

1. The Game Setting is not experiencing a pandemic of the COVID-19 virus. In this setting, the virus was contained before it became a pandemic. The reason for this is that the social measures and behaviors needed to address this issue in our Real Life make RPing difficult (writing out social distancing is about as interactive as actual social distancing.)

Where do the characters live?
Characters must have their primary residence in New York City. They can leave the city and travel around the world as needed. Players decide what their character's home looks like and where they are located in the city limits.

What is The Bureau?
The Bureau of Interdimensional Activity or BIA is a secret world-wide organization that operates free of any government entity. They clean up any messes the alternate universes cause in this reality. They have technologies, gleaned from other realities that make it possible to erase memories, heal people, rebuild buildings and infrastructure, and know when Memory Events happen.

How do they know? what are those technologies? how did they get all these technologies? How are they funded if they operate independently from any government agency? Who runs the agency? What is the oversight here?

My, don't you ask a lot of questions.

Characters can visit the Bureau building or contact the Bureau (the card your character is given by Mr. Martin after their Memory Event contains the contact information - phone number, email, physical address). However, outside plot and mod approval, characters will not make it past the reception desk and their calls will go to a voice mail system for screening.

Are there NPCs? Can my character interact with them?
There are Mod Controlled NPCs - listed here. The mods don't have time to play out scenes with these NPCs. But the Mods will use them for plots if necessary. And, there is a way for characters to ask questions and receive more or less straight answers, by spending points, players can have their characters ask a question and get an answer from one of the NPCs. See the Points Page for more information.

There are NPC Differents, and they are dealing with memory regains, too, like the Played Characters are. They come and go from the setting. Players can make vague references to these NPCs at Bureau hosted things. Some stick around and some disappear.

Then there are just the NPC general population of the Earth and Extended Universe Settings - these are Setting NPCs. Players are welcome to come up with residences of NYC to briefly play against for their needs - uber drivers, people on the subway, crowd on the street, family outside of played characters, etc.

What do the Setting NPCs think about The Bureau?
Setting NPCs do not know about The Bureau. The Bureau works hard to keep the agency secret – and they use many means. Some of these are due to technological advances your character has never heard of before (see that memory erasing above). They use that tech to keep The Bureau secret and hidden from the minds of the Setting NPCs.

If your character were to try to expose The Bureau, Setting NPCs would consider The Bureau nothing more than a conspiracy theory. At best, the Setting NPCs will acknowledge that your character believes The Bureau is real, but they would not personally believe The Bureau exists or that your character is talking about a real, actual agency.

What would happen if a Setting NPC saw my character use their meta powers/use the Network?
If a Setting NPC sees your character use their meta powers, depending on the impressiveness of the power displayed, the Setting NPC will just think it’s a neat magic trick.

If the display of meta powers is particularly large, The Bureau will intervene and use their tech to help the Setting NPC believe it was just an elaborate magic trick. And The Bureau will have some strong words or consequences for your character depending on your character’s intent and frequency of displays.

The Network looks like any old online forum, so no Setting NPC would consider it special or of significance. If they happen to see the contents of the Network, they would think it is a for people to talk about the above mentioned conspiracy theory. (But no NPC can post to the Network. NPCs can appear in the background of played characters' video or voice posts, but this should be kept to a minimum.)

What parameters are there for a character's Earth AU?
Because each character starts out as a human Earthling, they have an Earth Backstory - An Earth AU. This is their life on Earth before their first Memory Event. Every player needs to create an Earth AU for their character and put it in their app.

Generally players should have fun creating a new Earth life for their characters. These are a few parameters:

Appearance:
All Earth AUs will start as human. Characters should generally fit their canon physical descriptions. You don't have to use the same PB used in media for your character, but, for example, if you're apping Harry Potter, they should be reminiscent of Canon Harry Potter. Characters must remain racially/ethnically the same as they are in canon.

For characters who are not human in their canon setting, they will start out human in this game. For non-human character, players decide what they look like. Players are given some more leeway with regard to PBs for these characters as their race/ethnicity is open to interpretation. These characters can get their non-human, canon bodies later on. (See below for more details about non-human characters and PBs.)

Names:
Working with your character's canon name, do what fits best for their Earth AU and your preferences.

If a character has only one canon name, pick a second name (or even third name) so they have a full name to fit Earth customs. That can mean picking a surname for them, or making their canon name their surname and picking a different first name. Or use their canon name as a middle name or nickname that they go by.

If a character is known prominently by more than one name, players can pick the name that works best for their Earth AU.

Any weirdness of names will just be a thing people will wave off as a game mechanic.

Age:
A character's canon point can be from any point in their canon so long as there are enough memories to make them work. A character's Earth AU age does not need to match their canon point age. However, due to the nature of the game concept and setting, Earth AUs must be a minimum of 16 years old. Younger AUs may be considered on a case-by-case basis if discussed with the mod team.

History/Backstory:
We encourage you to be creative, however a few things should be kept in mind:

1. The Earth AU MUST fit with our reality. For example: Jeff Bezos is the richest man in our world, so no, your character cannot be richer than him, but your character can still be rich if you want them to be. But you must also be realistic. Examples: Homeless child orphans don’t grow up on Earth to become CEOs of multi-billion dollar corporations without serious intervention. Children aren't criminal/entrepreneurial masterminds. Repeatedly breaking the law will likely land your character in trouble with the law. Nuns cannot adopt, etc.

2. No excessive exceptionalism. Everyone on Earth is unique and has a few exceptional qualities/events in their life. But a Modern Earth AU history should not be loaded with so many exceptional qualities/events in the character’s life. Your character should not be the Most Best at everything. Again, be realistic – these characters live in our world.

3. No extraneous drama. A bit of drama in a character’s history is fine, examples: people’s parents get divorced, kids get bullied in school, family members die, and people do get assaulted. It’s okay to have some drama in your character’s Earth AU. But something like, for example, everyone in your character’s life (parents, siblings, adopted family, spouse, their pet dog, etc.) ending up murdered is excessive. Again, be realistic.

4. Players can use app-able canonmates as part of their character’s Earth AU ONLY if they have an agreement with another player of that canonmate to do so. Otherwise, a player cannot incorporate app-able canonmates into their character’s Earth AU.

5. Players may create NPCs to feature as family/friends to flesh out their character’s Earth AU with the understanding that these NPCs are NOT additional characters the player is apping. These NPCs can show up from time to time in logs, but they should not feature heavily/often in scenes with the played characters (In other words, players should be primarily focused on playing their character with the other characters in the game.)

Players are welcome to translate their character’s canon history into something that fits on our Modern Earth, but it must follow the guidelines set above. Many character’s canon histories are full of exceptionalism and extraneous drama (this is fine for the canon memories a character gets back) but players should keep in mind this won’t work for the Modern Earth AU and make adjustments accordingly.

Game Mechanics

What's the Network?
The Bureau set up a forum for the characters to find others like themselves and discuss their shared experiences. This is The Network. However, this certainly raises questions among the Different: Did the Bureau create this because they understand the benefits of support groups or is The Bureau using this as a way to study and keep track of the characters? These are good questions for characters to explore!

Characters can access this network with their smart devices.

As of July 2020, there is a private option on the network for avoiding the prying eyes of the Bureau (the Bureau doesn't know about this). Please mark your posts as 'filtered from the Bureau' or simply 'filtered' in the subject line to activate this option. This filter program was created by one of the Different.

How do the characters get canon memories/powers/items/bodies?
Players need to keep two things in mind.

OOC Mechanism - In order to get canon memories, powers, items, and bodies (if applicable) players must use points earned from activity. Check out the Points Page.

IC Mechanism - Memories can come back (1) during dreams, or (2) as instant flash backs (the character is awake, no time passes in this reality, but in the character's mind they live out the memory). It's up to the player to decide which option they want to use. Memories can repeat as well, the character can get the same memory over and over if the player wants to do that to them.

Powers come back during sleep. Meta powers regains are broken into two types: Simple Powers and Complex Powers, a player will be informed about their character's powers type when they are accepted into the game. Simple Powers are regained by the power. Complex Powers are regained by 10% intervals of strength of power.

Alien bodies or Body Modifications will come back during sleep.

Items can show up whenever a character is not looking. Some items might be banned from the game due to their capacity to break the game. Some items might be claimed by multiple characters, in this instance, a duplicate will show up as needed.

How your character deals with any of this is up to you.

Can my character work for The Bureau?
Yes, but characters must be in the game at least a month. They will not have supervisory roles, they will be doing what The Bureau directs them to do. The Bureau will hire characters for: Planetary Security, Health and Medical Assistance, Containment, and Public Relations.

However, whatever information your character learns about the Bureau will come from the Mods and need to be approved by the Mods first.

Established Character Compliance
Canon interpretations or headcanon is first come first serve. Earth AU Histories are also first come first serve. Once a character is in game, that player controls the Earth AU connections they've established for their character, and all incoming characters that are associated with the canon parts of that character need to be on the same page.

Example: If someone brings in Mickey Mouse, and his Earth AU is that he's an electrician married to someone named Jesse with two kids, and then a second player wants to bring in Minnie Mouse, the second player would need to work with the Earth AU of Mickey. They cannot just assume Minnie will be part of Mickey's Earth AU.

Existing players are welcome to retcon their Earth AUs to accommodate incoming canonmates or characters with Earth AUs that might bring them into the social sphere of the existing character. If players would like to do this, just give the mods a heads up.

To make sure there is smooth cohesion between incoming characters and existing characters, players of incoming characters will need to contact the players of canonmates and discuss Earth AU Histories prior to reserving a character. Players of established characters get the right to refuse Earth AU connections between their characters and incoming characters.

The Canonmate Communications page is here.

What is the Point System? Is the Point System mandatory?
The Point System is a mechanism set up to manage the return of characters' canon memories/powers/items/bodies or participation in some plots and to incentivize additional activity.

The Point System is not mandatory, but it is the only way for your character to get their canon memories/powers/items/bodies or participate in some plots. Players can engage with the point system (and thus the return of memories/powers/canon items) at their own speed. There is no need to rush to get all these things. Players can take their time.

Points are tallied at the Activity Check each month.

Check out the Points Page for details about earning and spending points.

What are Strikes?
Strikes are given as a warning when players have an unexcused activity check miss. A strike is a last resort grace for missing activity in a month, and can be removed by doing double minimum AC in a subsequent month. But having a strike on a character can affect a player's ability to engages with some mechanisms of the game. See the Strike Info for details.

Game Time v. Real Time
This game has a standard 1:1 day ratio. So 1 OOC day = 1 IC day. The game also follows the Gregorian Calendar.

Gameplay

CR & Lines
Het, slash, femme, and gen are all accepted and encouraged in the game. Characters do not need to stick to canon ships in game, but relationships should always be played out and developed in a realistic manner.

Most mature lines/themes are also allowed, but must be behind cuts and players should always use appropriate ratings/trigger warnings for posts when necessary. Players should keep in mind that while sex lines are permitted, this is not a sex game. Such lines cannot be the whole focus of the player reason for being in the game, AND all sex lines must be between adult characters.

Regulated lines - Lines that are major or potentially disruptive to the whole game must be discussed with the Mod-team first. These could be, but are not limited to: character death, severe abuse/assault lines, rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, pregnancy lines, strong kinks, characters doing something to affect the whole game space, major illegal activity, game-wide character-driven plots that affect more than a few characters, etc. The Mod-team won't necessarily say no, but we need to discuss these types of plots with all involved players first.

Prohibited lines - Some plots will not be allowed In-game. They just won't. They are: child abuse, Parent/child incest, sibling incest, bestiality*, adult/child sexual abuse, Mpreg (unless part of the character’s fandom), and problematic kinks.

*The Mods understand that some characters will themselves be what we would consider animals, but all characters in game must be sentient. For the purposes of this game, the Mods will define 'bestiality' as sexual acts perpetrated by a sentient being against a non-sentient animal.

What are the various kinds of plots?
There are a few kinds of plots in this game: Player plots, Mod controlled Game-Wide Plots, and an over-arching meta plot.

Player plots - These can be small, but impactful plots (Mini-Plots) that affect only a few characters at a time but don't affect the whole game. Or, if a player has an idea for a game-wide plot (Game-Wide Plot), they are welcome to spearhead a game-wide plot. Players will need to use points for these kinds of plots AND need Mod approval for either. Come talk to the Mods if you want clarification or have an idea.

Mod Driven Game-Wide Plots - These are the plots the Mods will run, we will try to be game-inclusive but optional so players can choose how to be involved.

Meta Plot - In the background of the game, there is the Bureau. Who knows what it is doing? What is its actual purpose? What do they want with the Different? The Meta Plot explores these questions.

How do meta powers interact in this setting?
Because meta powers come from specific universes they will be considered all unique to their universe. Ex: the Force isn't Harry Potter magic, and a Force user cannot do Harry Potter Magic, and vice verse, a Force user couldn't detect Harry Potter Magic and vice versa.

How they all interact when they come in contact with each other we'll leave up to the players to decide on a case by case basis. Please try not to 'power trump' other characters' abilities. Just be respectful here. If players don't agree, the mods will decide. But unless players have a problem with how something is handled, the mods will assume everything is all fine.

Hiatuses
Players are allowed to take hiatuses from the game, real life happens. However, there are a few rules players must follow regarding hiatuses.

Only an official hiatus will excuse a player from the Activity Check. Players must respond to the Hiatus Page to make their hiatus official. It is also common courtesy to let your fellow players know that you are on hiatus.

If a player is on hiatus for the majority of the month (16 or more days), or spanning the week of the Activity Check they will be excused from that month's AC, and they will not receive a strike.

Hiatuses should be used sparingly and should not be abused. A player cannot miss two AC's in a row. And if the Mod-team notices a pattern of frequent hiatus usage, they will talk with the player.

When a player is on hiatus they will not be able to app additional characters or use their character points.

But if a player is struggling, we encourage them to come speak to the Mod-team. We are understanding. But we can't help you if you don't let us know what's going on. We'll work with you, we don't want to lose players.

Drops
Dropping is something that hits all of us at one point or another. If for whatever reason you need to drop a character or the game as a whole, we understand. However, please go here and fill out the form there as a courtesy for our record keeping.

Characters that are dropped lose all their points that cannot be retrieved if re-apped.

If a player drops a character and changes their mind, they must wait a full month from the date they dropped the character to re-apply for the character.

How are drops and re-apps explained in game?
Drops will be handled on a case by case basis. And will be handled in one of two ways depending on 1) how much CR a dropped character had, and 2) what works best for the remaining players in the game.

Option 1
A dropped character just gets too busy with life or moves out of New York City to explore life opportunities elsewhere. These dropped characters fade from the lives of the characters remaining in game.

Option 2
The character disappears, due to some mysterious, unexplainable cause.

Re-Apps
Characters that were once in game and then dropped can be picked up again.

The mods will talk to the players of the characters who had the closest CR with the dropped character to see how easiest it will be for them. They can be given a grace period to look for someone to pick up that character with the same CR, if they so want. However, after a period of time, if no one picks up the character, the mods will open the character up to anyone wanting to pick them up. If this is the case, some retconning may need to happen. The mods will discuss with everyone involved.

Canon Updating
Canon updating - whether it's to change your character's original canon point on their app or to incorporate new information from on-going fandoms - is allowed, however they should be used infrequently. Players need to talk to the Mod-team first. There will be a few steps a player must do to get the canon update. Depending on where a character is at in their memory regaining the new memories may simply be incorporated into the characters existing chart OR a character will need an additional memory chart to account for the new memories. Mods will discuss this with a player when a canon update is requested.

4TH-Walling
Fourth-Walling is allowed ONLY if a player wants their character to be Fourth-Walled. This is left up to the character's player to decide.

Do not fourth-wall a character if the character's player does not want it to happen. Players may reference the Taken Page to see who is, and who is not, canon-puncturable. Always check first!

If a player wishes to canon-puncture their character, they must not do this in an overt, in-your-face way in the game. Characters discussing it among friends is certainly fine, but players should avoid posts that do not allow others the option to pass it by. (Best to put canon puncturing material behind a cut tag.)

How do non-human characters work in this setting?
Non-human characters are allowed in the game, however, they start out as human. They can get their non-human bodies while in game. When these characters get their canon bodies back, The Bureau will give them a glamor that helps them appear the same human self they were before they started dreaming.

Size does not matter for non-human characters. The glamor has the ability to make a person fit into spaces their Earth AU body would have fit before the character received their glamor.

The glamor is a deceive the character wears and can remove. The Mods will talk to the player to decide what kind of device - necklace, bracelet, etc. - when the player submits points to receive the character's canon body.

How do characters with 'unique' canon needs work in this setting?
Some canon characters have 'unique' needs - vampires, aliens that don't breathe oxygen, etc. If a character becomes one of those due to receiving their canon powers/bodies, The Bureau will provide.

If you have one of those characters, come talk to the Mods before your character expierences these unique canon needs.

Can characters die in game?
Yes. Some plots might go that dark. However, it needs to be approved by the Mod-team. It shouldn't happen frequently. And there will always be something required from the character to come back from dying if they are going to come back. Such as the loss of some power or some items. These consequences will be discussed beforehand.

If it is not part of a game-wide plot, then the Mods will consider this a "mini player-plot" and players will need still need to talk to the Mods.

Killing off a character completely will not always be an option for characters.

Can characters get pregnant?
Yes. This will be considered a "mini player-plot". So players will need Mod approval first. There will only be M-Preg if it's part of a character's canon.

Can characters break the law?
Yes. Small crimes committed infrequently will go unnoticed unless a player wants their character to get in trouble. If you want your character to get caught shoplifting or tagging, go for it.

However, serious crimes or an excessive amount of smaller crimes will need Mod-Approval. The mods will count this as a 'mini player plot'. And all of this criminal behavior will have in-game consequences that one would expect for breaking the law.

Serious crimes include: minor crimes committed frequently, major physical fights/assaults, murder, rape, sexual assault, robbery, terrorism, station destruction. All of these need mod approval before they can be played out.

What are the various comms for this game?
These are the following communities and journals for the game:

Mod Journal - All the game information is kept on this journal.

Network Comm - This is the Network that The Bureau set up for the characters to connect with one another. The style of writing for this comm is first person, but action spamming is perfectly fine.

The network supports text, voice, and video communications. Please label them appropriately in the subject line. Characters cannot send anonymous messages. As of July 2020, there is a private option on the network for avoiding the prying eyes of the Bureau. Please mark your posts as 'filtered from the Bureau' or simply 'filtered' in the subject line to activate this option.

Communications Comm - This comm is for all other first person communications: texts, phone calls, letters, etc. Action spam is perfectly fine. Most DW games allow contact posts on a character's journal, but because there is a point system involved, this comm was implemented to make sure those types of communications get counted at AC time.

Players should note that this community takes the place of character inboxes. All activity for the game should take place in the three game communities (Network, Comm, and Logs).

Logs Comm - This is the game's threading community. Third person is used in this community. Please use a header and cut tag for this comm.

OOC Comm - This is the out of character communications community. Players can use this comm to communicate with each other, post hiatus announcements, introduce themselves, any necessary OOC communication. Mods will post all plots/events details and AC posts in this community.

Meme Comm - This is just a 'fun place' community. Memes will be posted here. The Test Drive Meme will be here. Things played in this comm will not be taken into the 'game canon' unless there is mod approval. So come talk to us!

Minimum Activity Requirements
Every player is required to do the minimum amount of activity for each of their characters every month. Minimum activity is one (1) instance of substantial interaction a month.

That instance of substantial play can be any one of the following options:
A log sub-thread comment chain, with at least five (5) comments from your character.
A gdocs/email log either completed or showing five comments from your character.
A network/comm comment chain, with at least five (7) comments from your character.
A network/comm post from your character, with every top-level comment addressed in a substantial way. "Substantial" is subjective and the Mods will try to be fair, but basically, no one is ignored.

Minimum activity keeps a character in the game. But doing more than the minimum activity gets characters more Ppints.

Activity Checks
The Activity Check will be posted from the 1st to the 7th of every month, to check the activity of the previous month. Every player must respond to the check before 11:59 p.m. PST on the 7th. Unless the player has an official hiatus (hiatus info can be found Here), then they are excused. Activity Check requirements will range from a simple roll call to providing proof of minimum activity. Requirements will be detailed at every check.

If a player fails to meet the minimum activity requirements per Activity Period, they will receive an Strike (see more about strikes Here). However, the Mods are flexible for certain circumstances, so please, come talk to the Mods if you need assistance.

Warnings and Spoilers Labels
Mature content must be warned for and placed behind a cut. Players should avoid spoiling each other, put new material less than a month old behind a cut. This applies for content on the Network, Log, Comm, and OOC communities.

The following things absolutely must be warned for on threads: violence, sexual content, IC bigotry, and recent spoilers. If a thread contains this stuff, slap a warning on the original post and put the content behind a cut. If the trigger is in a thread on a Catch-All post, make sure to put a warning in the subject line of the comment when the warning is needed.

Applying

Allowed Fandoms
We try to be as inclusive of as many fandoms/characters as possible with very few exceptions.

Fandoms can be from: books, comics, graphic novels, movies, TV shows, cartoons, video games, table top games, and other media sources (so long as there is a canon setting with enough details to develop well rounded characters). Webcomics/webseries/webcontent are allowable fandoms so long as they are released from a legitimate publishing company. There must exist a detailed account of that character's fandom world with enough structure for the Mod-team to understand a defined setting for the fandom. Also, the Mods need to be able to fact check applications, so there needs to be information in English about the fandom.

Allowed Characters
As with fandoms, this game tries to be as inclusive of possible characters as possible.

The following types of characters are accepted:
Canon characters - both major or minor characters. Even the minor characters that are mentioned once in the canon work (players will just need to be prepared to flesh out the character).

Canon OCs - so long as the character fits within their canon setting framework (characters from table top RPGs, characters from such media will fall in this category) players are allowed to create and bring in a fandom OC.

Canon Variations - so long as each version is distinct enough from the others (example: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, BBC's Sherlock, ABC's Elementary). It will just be played off as a coincidence in the game, like if you met another person with your same name, etc.

Canon AUs - If there is an AU version specifically referenced in canon (example: Star Trek TOS and Star Trek AOS; or Deep Space Nine Benjamin Sisko and Mirror Benjamin Sisko) these characters are allowed. It will just be played off as a coincidence in the game, like if you met another person with your same name, etc.

CR AUs - Characters with previous history from another game are allowed, but memories from those games will be treated like a character's canon memories and will be earned back in that way. Talk to the Mods for further details.

Canon Compliance & Headcanon
A character's canon memories must be compliant to their canon.

Headcanon is allowed for canon characters so long as it:
does not contradict the character's canon history
does not contradict the greater canon structure of the character's universe (headcanon must make sense),
does not break the rules of the character's canon, and
fits with the current characters in the game--characters in game are controlling.

In the case of ongoing canons (like comic series or television series, etc.) when new information is revealed about your character's past, its incorporation into your character's memories is dependent on where it would fall on the chronological list of your character's memories. If the new info falls before your character's canon point, it can be added to their list of memories, and redeemed via points like the rest of their memories. If it falls after your character's canon point, come talk to the mods.

Also, if it contradicts the headcanon you have for your character that you've created to fill the gaps, come see the Mod-team and we will try to help you reincorporate as much of your headcanon as possible. But keep in mind that canon > headcanon.

Restricted Character Types
There are some characters that are not allowed.

Historical Figures - Actual real people cannot be played here. Historical figures will be allowed if they are a character in an actual work of fiction. For example, Abe Lincoln from Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (book or movie) is acceptable. But Abraham Lincoln, the actual non-fictionalized president of the USA is not appable (biopics meant to accurately depict a person, like Lincoln (2012) will not be considered 'fandoms' and no one from them can be apped.)

Player OCs/AUs - The game doesn't allow Player OCs (characters the player creates belonging to no fandom at all) or Player AUs (What-ifs, Rule!63, etc.)

Taken Characters - We've listed above the ways that there could be multiples of a character; however, not included are exact duplicates. If we have a canon Harry Potter in game already, we will not allow another player to pick up Harry Potter from another point in canon. Once in game, that character's slot is filled.

This list can be added to at any time if the mod-team feels the need to do so.

Character Caps and Bans
Subject to the needs of the game, some characters will be capped or banned.

Evil Aligned Characters - Evil-aligned characters are allowed. But if the Mod-team feels the game has too many evil aligned characters, who are derailing the direction of the game, we will cap the number of wholly evil characters we allow into the game for a while. Or if the evil-aligned character is too powerful/triggering, the mods will ban the character.

Cast Caps - If we feel one fandom is taking over the game and derailing the direction of the game, we'll cap the number of characters from that fandom for a while. There are no fandom caps at this time.

Banned Characters/Fandoms - The Mod-team reserves the right to ban characters or fandoms that they feel would not be a good fit for the game. This can be temporary or permanent. These characters will be listed on the application page.

Player Caps - The current player cap for the game is set at 50 players. This is subject to change in the future should the needs of the game change.

Any banned characters will be posted on the Reserves Page.

PBs, Journals, Icons
Players must use race/ethnically appropriate icons for their characters. White-washing characters will not be allowed. Players should also have a journal for their character. Players can find resources to locate PBs on the Resource Page.

Players of non-human characters must pick a human PB for their character, however, they have two options:
a) They can use icons of that human PB until they get their character’s non-human body back, OR
b) They can keep their non-human icons, but should supply three or more clear images of the human PB with various expressions posted to their journal on the same page they post their non-F-locked memory chart, and they should also be sure to mention their character's status as human in game tags.

Reserves & Applications
Players can have up to five (5) characters total; and up to two (2) characters from the same fandom so long as they wouldn't reasonably be expected to interact often. (Example: Burt and Ernie from Sesame Street would be expected to interact often so they could not be played by the same player.) Additionally, players cannot have more than one version of a given character at a time.

RESERVES (See Reserves Page):
Players can have up to two (2) reserves at a time.
reserves are always open.
reserves last for two weeks.
Players can renew reserves once (another two weeks). After that they must wait a whole month before placing a hold on the same character again.
If a player has maxed out their character limit, they cannot reserve/apply for another character until they have an opening on their roster.

APPLICATIONS (See Applications Page):
Players can app up to two (2) characters at the same time.
Apps can be submitted at any time, however, App Days (when apps are officially accepted) are every Saturday.
After three (3) rejections with no successful apps into the game, a player can no longer attempt to apply to the game.

A player must have no strikes on their current characters, and/or cannot be on hiatus if they want to hold/app more characters.

Personal Conduct

Don't be an Asshole
Respect your fellow players. Shitty behavior will NOT be tolerated. Don't harass your fellow players. Do not create a hostile or toxic environment in our game or in the extensions of our game (eg: game group discussions on Plurk/Discord). Treat your fellow players the way they want to be treated.

IC =/= OOC
Don’t take IC, in-game interactions personally. Don’t take OOC knowledge IC unless it would be appropriate. And don’t use your character as a weapon in-game to attack your fellow players.

No Godmodding
Do not move or attribute any action to any character(s) (or their possessions) not your own without first gaining permission from the player of said other character(s). Be careful and respectful with what you assume about characters not your own – when in doubt: ASK.

Additionally, characters with meta powers (magic, the Force, mutant powers, etc.) cannot use their powers against other characters (played or NPC) unless all players consent.

Be an Adult, Literally
All players must be 18 years of age or older.

Play
This is a game of collaborative writing. So: play! Players should be collaborating, plotting, and building new CR inside and outside of their character's fandom. Everyone should try to be inclusive.

No Character Squatting
Character Squatting is any pattern of activity that technically meets the AC rules, but results in a player being inactive the majority of the time to the detriment of other players. Don't do this.

EXAMPLES (BUT NOT LIMITED TO):
Playing only enough to make AC, then dropping your threads after passing AC.
Being idle for the majority of the month, and only being active around AC.
A pattern of frequent hiatuses, resulting in the player being absent the majority of the time.
A pattern of frequently missing AC or relying on the mercy of the Mod-team to pass the AC.
Handwaving all or most of your critical CR or character development.

A player will not be penalized for the occasional month of low activity, real life happens to all of us. But if it becomes a pattern, Mods will talk with the player.

Rules Disclaimer
All players must abide by the rules stated on this rules page, and any other information on our other information pages.

Final decisions on all rules and matters are, naturally, left to the Mods' discretion. However, we welcome respectful discussions and suggestions.

Rule breaking will be addressed by the Mods as they are brought to our attention. We prefer working with players first before removing them from the game and we will try our best to resolve problems so that everyone gets to stay and play. However, severe rule breaking (for example: egregious harrassment of other players) might be grounds for immediate removal. Our goal is to create a fun, safe place to play.

All rules are subject to change - to be added to or subtracted from - at the discretion of the Mods. Major changes will be announced in the OOC comm. If you have clarification questions or concerns about something not addressed, please feel free ask them in the comment titled 'Questions' below, or to contact the Mods Here.
